Boy,3 wont woke up after eating granmothers "special" chochalate cookies loaded with marijuana

A three-year-old boy looking for a sweet treat at his grandmother's house unwittingly gobbled up her marijuana-laced chocolate chip cookies and had to be rushed to the hospital.

The boy's family called an ambulance on Saturday morning when he wouldn't wake up after sleeping more than 16 hours at his family's home in Murrieta, California.

It wasn't until the child was in hospital that his family realized that the unsupervised toddler had eaten an unknown number of highly-potent drug cookies that his grandmother baked to help her cope with cancer.

The woman said the treats contained so much THC, the active chemical in marijuana, that one silver dollar-size bite was enough to treat the excruciating pain of her disease and put her to sleep, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported.

The grandmother, whose name was not released, had a prescription for the drug, which is considered a controlled substance by the federal government but allowed for medical use in California.

Police said she and the boy's father could face child endangerment charges for letting the child find the pot cookies.

The father left his son in the care of the boy's grandmother while he was at work on Friday.

The grandmother kept the cookies in an out-of-the-way refrigerator in the garage, where he apparently discovered them after sneaking out of sight.

The toddler's father told police he noticed crumbs on the floor outside the refrigerator when he came home from work, but thought his mother had eaten a cookie before going to bed.

It wasn't until he found his son unconscious, but breathing, the next morning that he realized the toddler must have eaten the drug-laced cookies, the Press-Enterprise reported.

The grandmother told police the boy likely slipped into the garage while she wasn't looking.

The child was admitted to the hospital for observation, but appeared to recover from the drugs.

Police say his grandmother had vowed never to bake marijuana cookies again.
