Several historical buildings that was over 200 years old has collapsed and the Italian authorities does not have full overview of how many people may be trapped in collapsed buildings.

Several international media has described the earthquake as one of the most powerful ever to hit northern Italy and the fear has engulfed people when 300 people died in the earthquake that hit L’Aquila in the south in 2009.

Danger not over yet

There is already been registered several aftershocks and there may be new earthquakes to come. Even though they will decrease in strength, the old buildings that were damaged in the night will tolerate less. The reason behind the material damage is that the shake occurred only 5 km into the ground.

Geological conditions indicate that it “definitely” will come earthquakes affecting Italy strongly, but it is impossible to determine if it will happen in a day or five hundred years. At the same time, many more aftershocks will come in the following days.
