How I stood by the roadside, said Inge Telhaug (56). The police took the flag from him and arrested him.
On 14th May Israel friendly Inge Telhaug (56) stood on the roadside at E39 with a large Israeli flag and a Norwegian flag. The purpose was to celebrate the date of Israel's declaration of independence 14 May 1948.
The police arrived three times and asked him to remove himself from the road.
- In addition, I was fined 10,000NOK, he said.
The police stopped and talked to Telhaug at 16.06, 17.13 and again at 18.52, all the time because he should have "gone on the road" and "waving flags".
- Firstly, I'm not waving, I kept it right up when I was walking along the roadside. There I stood, safely behind the barrier, I put it over the right shoulder, across the creek away from the road so you can see in the picture, says Telhaug.
He tells his version because he wants to emphasize that he acted restrained and calm.
- Second, I was not on the road, as the police said. I just crossed the road, something you need to do to get where you're going. There's no walking and cycling out here. I went off the asphalt edge, and spent my whole time behind the barrier, he said.
The police, however, said Telhaug was an obstacle and danger of the traffic.
- He was told not to go on the road when he celebrated.
Police also strip searched him and seized a folding knife and took the two flags.
