Norwegian economic aid to developing countries has increased dramatically since the beginning in 1962.
A total of NOK 516 billion in financial aid has been granted from 1962 and up to now, according to the paper Bistandsaktuelt. This is equal to half of an annual Norwegian state budget.Professor Øyvind Østerud at the University of Oslo says that this funding has also been beneficial to Norway, inasmuch as it has as it has strengthened Norway's political role abroad, and acted as a door opener for Norwegian industry.
