The Olympic Games kickoff officially
August 6, Rio De Janero: The Lighting of the Olympic torch has marked the beginning of the 2016 Rio Olympics, on Saturday.
Former Brazilian tennis No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten, "Guga" carried the Olympic torch into the stadium, before passing it to basket ball player Hortensia Marcari, followed by long distance runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima who lighted up the Olympic flame, n place of Pele.
The flame sits in a noticeably more understated cauldron than some previous Olympic opening ceremonies however the fireworks finale was outstanding, the Olympic Rings explode into the sky.
The International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach paid special tribute to the refugee team in his speech. He also highlighted the importance of the unity the Olympics embodies in a time of conflict. "We are living in a world of crisis, mistrust, and uncertainty. Here is our Olympic answer – over 10,000 athletes of the world, living together in one Olympic village, sharing their meals and emotions. In this Olympic world, there is one universal law for everybody…we are all equal. The values of our shared humanity are stronger than the forces which want to divide us."
