Republican Trump calls to punish women for illegal abortions
March 31, Washington: Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump briefly called for "some form of punishment" for women who have abortions, if it became illegal.
After the comment, he has one again manage to anger people of both sides of one of the most polarizing issue in the country.
Abortion has been legal in the United States since 1973 after a landmark Supreme Court ruling.
His initial comments made during a town hall interview with cable network MSNBC sparked a wave of criticism. Trump said that he supports a ban
on abortion and that if a woman tries to get one illegally, then "there has to be some form of punishment."
However, Trump quickly reversed his position, saying only the person who performed the abortion should be punished, media reports said.
The front-runner supports a ban on abortions, with certain exceptions.
Only the high court or a constitutional amendment has the power to overturn Roe v Wade and make abortion illegal.
Once a Democrat, Trump has been criticised for supporting abortion rights in the past.
