Massive earthquake rocks Chilean coast; three killed
Sept 17, SANTIAGO: An 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Chile's coast killing at least three people with Tsunami alert issued and coastal evacuations.
According to Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, the victims included 35-year old woman killed by a falling roof, a 20-year old woman killed by falling rocks and an octagenarian suffering heart attack.
Several houses are reported to have been damaged, while the number of casualties could also rise. The quake's epicentre was about 54 kilometres west of Illapel and it occured around 7:54 PM local time. The quake struck at the depth of 33 kilometres.
Chile's national emergency agency issued a tsunami alert, ordering evacuations in coastal areas from Arica to Puerto Aysen. Several residents have come out of their houses and gathered in the highlands in fear of Tsunami.
