Maldives President declares 30-day emergency
Nov.4, Male: The Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Gayoom has declared a state of emergency for a month ahead of a major anti-government rally.
Presidential spokesman Muaz Ali tweeted on Wednesday saying Maldives declares state of emergency for a period of 30 days starting from 12 pm
Wednesday. The declaration gives security forces sweeping powers to arrest suspects.
Ali further said, "President Yameen has declared (a) state of emergency to ensure the safety and security of every citizen."
It comes two days before the planned protest by the country's main opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Mohamed Nasheed, leader of MDP was jailed in March after a widely criticised conviction under anti-terror laws.
Meanwhile, authorities said they had defused a bomb planted near the presidential palace on Monday.
