German MP's vote in favor Gay marriages
June 30, Berlin: German on Friday, has legalised gay marriages after a majority of German MP's voted in favour of a new law legalising gay marriage.
Gay rights activists and supporters werre seen celebrating outside the parliament as the reform grants couples full marital rights, and allows them to adopt children. Merkel's political opponents were strongly in favour of the reform, while she voted against it. During her 2013 election campaign, Merkel had argued against gay marriage on the grounds of "children's welfare," and admitted that she had a "hard time" with the issue.
Merkel's current coalition partners - the Social Democrats (SPD), who are trailing Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) in opinion polls - seized the political initiative. They called for a vote by the time parliament went into summer recess at the end of the week - prompting Mrs Merkel to complain she'd been "ambushed".
