Chinese director Zhang Yimou defends casting of Matt Damon
Aug.5, Beijing: Acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou has responded to criticism from an Asian-American actress over the casting of Matt Damon as his movie's lead, saying the role was never conceived for a Chinese actor.
Damon will star in "The Great Wall," a $150 million fantasy movie made by China and Hollywood.
Constance Wu, who acts in a U.S. comedy series centered on an immigrant family called "Fresh Off the Boat," said last week that Damon's casting was "perpetuating the racist myth" that only a white man can save the world, reports said.
Zhang told Entertainment Weekly's website Thursday that the arrival of Damon's character is an important plot point in the movie and the character was never intended to be Chinese. Zhang said actors portraying the movie's four other "major heroes" are Chinese.
