Bangladesh cyclone kills five, forces thousands flee from homes

May 21, Dhaka: At least five people have been killed and tens of thousands forced to flee their homes due to strong winds and heavy rain unleashed by Cyclone Roanu in Bangladesh on Saturday.

Local media reported that the deaths were caused by the collapse of houses in Bhola, Chittagong and Patuakhali districts. Cyclone Roanu crossed the southern coastal district of Cox's Bazar and weakened after triggering rains.

The meteorological office said in a statement that dozens of villages had been submerged by floodwaters.

Mohammed Ali Hossain, a government administrator, said nearly 100,000 people were forced from their homes on Moheshkhali island.
