    Australia PM defends new cabinet

Sept.21, Canberra: Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been forced to defend his new cabinet on the day they are sworn in at Government House in Canberra.

The new team includes several MPs with no cabinet experience, and five women, including the defense minister. Several supporters of former Prime Minister Tony Abbott have been dumped.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and some local media said Turnbull had only rewarded his supporters.

Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, the new prime minister said he had chosen his cabinet entirely on merit. "It is vital to have a contemporary, 21st-century government and that requires renewal," Turnbull told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
