Papua New Guinea Earthquake could trigger Tsunami:PTWC
Dec 17, Hawai: A Tsunami threat has been issued after a powerful earthquake, initially measured at magnitude 8.0, struck the east of Papua New Guinea on Saturday.
According to the US Geological Survey and The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible.
The tsunami waves are expected to reach one to three meters above the tide level along some coasts of the archipelago in the South West Pacific region and a tsunami threat to Hawaii is still being evaluated.
The quake initially struck about 157 kilometers east of the port of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, on Saturday and was measured at magnitude 8.0, according to the USGS. It was then re-scaled to magnitude 7.9.
